Writing residency

Support the creation of short format and the emergence of a new generation of authors

With the support of the Provence Alpes Côte d´Azur Regional Council and the City of Marseille, the Marseille Web Fest  launched a call for projects in June 2021 as part of the seventh edition of its Résidence d’Écriture.

Indeed, in order to support the creation of short format in Europe, this writing residency aims to allow the emergence of a new generation of creators / authors by offering residential writing workshops adapted to these new contents.

For its 2021 edition, the writing residency held from October 18 to 22 inclusive in Marseille. 10 authors were selected following this call for projects.

At the end of the writing residency, the authors pitched their project in front of a professional jury made up of Cécile Delacoudre, Julien Aubert, Joël Bassaget and Alexandre Cornu.

The Best Pitch Prize was awarded to Maja Costa for her “Réveil” project. It is the “Noces de Carton” project by Isabelle Lukacie and Philippe Enola which receives the 3,000 € writing aid grant from the CNC Talent.

The 10 authors also received a Final Draft license, partner of Marseille Web Fest. Final Draft is a text editor for writing and formatting screenplays.

For this new edition, Stephen Tolkin will honor us of being the patron of the 7th edition of the Writing Residence. 

Director, musician and showrunner of successful series like SEE s2 (Apple TV)”, Legend of the Seeker, Summerland or Somewhere Between, Stephen will also host an exceptional masterclass. He will also award the Best Pitch Prize.

After a career as program advisor, producer, Head of Drama and branch office manager, within major players in the sector such as TF1, FremantleMedia, Gaumont, Newen, Anne Santa Maria is now a consultant in content strategies for independent producers, Media groups and Audiovisual Markets (Reed Midem, Warner Tv France, Conecta Fiction, etc.). International contributor for 5 years on original digital creations in various festivals (Rio, Seoul, London, Moscow, Sicily, Canada, Italy, Spain, Germany, etc.) as conference speaker, jury and panelist, she presented the Master Class “The Game of Pitch” at the opening of the “In Development” of MIPTV – CanneSéries 2019. As a media trainer, she operates in different organisations: MIPTV Creative Talent Pitch 2017-2020 (32 projects – 24 different nationalities), CEEA, 4 J training “Pitcher a fiction project”, Media Faculty “Establish and Manage a budget of fiction production ”, Sorbonne – ASFORED, Master 2, INA-UCA,“ Formation Showrunner ”, Alsace cultural agency “Production of web series” / “Pitch your own project within the context of International Festivals ”, ESRA, CEFPF, Web Fest Berlin-Deutsche Telekom, Cristal Festival (Courchevel), etc.

CALL FOR PROJECTS

At the end of this call for projects, the selection of residents will be made by a jury made up by professionals screenwriters. This selection will be based on the candidate’s CV, on the interest of the project being written and on his motivation.

The writing residency will welcome authors, without age limit, European or from the Mediterranean basin over a total period of 5 days (Monday to Friday inclusive). Authors will be offered personalized workshops and a collective program of meetings with professionals in new media and new writing.

At the end of the residency, a pitch will be made by the residents of the projects in front of a jury. The Best Pitch award will be awarded by the CNC as well as a grant of 3000 euros (for French authors only).

    Announcement of the selected: September 20, 2021

  • Who can answer?

    Anyone living in Europe, with no age limit (Due to Covid, conditions of access to French territory may be requested by the authorities).
    IMPORTANT: fluency in English is recommanded

  • What pre-requisite?

    Have an advanced project in development (unitary, film, series, animated series) or in search of co-financing.

  • What support?

    The call for projects is completely free. For the selected participants *, the costs of transport, accommodation (excluding inhabitants of the South Region) and catering for lunches will be covered.

  • How to respond to the call for projects?

    Complete the form below in french or English.
    Each request must include the following documents:
    - 1 page presenting the project
    - Author's CV
    - A sworn statement attesting that the work presented is not subject to any "exclusive contract" with a production company
    - Authorization when the subject comes from a pre-existing work.
